Meghan has a new obsession... ok maybe an old obession and a new obsession. I try not to give dogs human characteristics but it is hard not to. I have had dogs who are moody, stubborn, even down right angry (Bo with the robot cat is a great example) and even with those traits I guess I wasn't paying attention enough to see everything I could because I would have seen obessions a bit more clearly and with the exception of Theo and his obession with anything round, most of my animals obession has minimal.
Meghan has an old obsession and that is any food on any surface area she can get to. Her favorite now - anything outside our apartment door. I have no idea if my neighbors know this or not, but we take Meghan outside to relieve herself and it takes a great deal of effort to get her off the concrete and onto the grass because she is literally scouring the area looking for food, regardless of how full her food dish is, stuff she finds on the ground always gets her attention, about a week ago, she took her leash to the limit to get an old chicken bone, which she didn't want to give up when I tried to take it from her. no meat, no skin, just the bone and it probably has been picked clean by whatever insects are in the area. Meghan just didn't care - it resembled food.
Her new obsession are cats. Our neighbors have cats and one actually let Meghan sniff it one time and she stood there wagging her tail and she was quite happy about it. Since that time, we are seemingly on the next hunt for smelling another cat. She remembers where they hang out, and she wants to check all the spots with the hopeful idea that one will be there. And if she sees one, not even food can interupt her desire to go and check it out, which the cats aren't generally wanting to engage in.
The reality of life is that I would have missed all of this if I hadn't been taking her outside and having to stay with her. (Dog doors are my friend) but I find some of it amusing and some of it annoying, depending on the hour I am outside with her. At 2 am this morning it was annoying, last Saturday morning it was amusing to watch her watch 2 cats howl at each other. She didn't know what to do with it but I still didn't let her get in the middle of it. I guess my biggest challenge is to not be impatient with the pup as she deals with her obsessions....
